De beste beschrijving die ik voor Calgary kan bedenken is een pokkelelijke, pokkedure cowboystad. Toevallig was ik in de stad tijdens de Stampede, een jaarlijks weerkerend rodeofestival, en een ongelofelijk dure aangelegenheid die enorm veel toeristen lijkt aan te trekken. Ik ben daar toch wel efkens binnen gegaan en heb redelijk wat tijd in het indianendorp doorgebracht, dat was veruit het meest interessante, en ge moest er niets voor bijbetalen. Ik was op tijd om wedstrijden in het hoepeldansen, indrukwekkend, en keelzingen, geen fan, te zien en wat later mocht ik ook een tipirechttrekkoers (ja man wat een woord) meemaken. Ik ben redelijk onmiddellijk fan geworden van de Blackfoot Chicks with Sticks, ik bedoel met zo’n naam kunt ge niet anders dan ervoor supporteren. Als zij een Facebookpagina hebben, ik word direct fan. Jammer dat ze uiteindelijk aan de zenuwen ten onder zijn gegaan. De attractie in Calgary die mij in alle geval het meest welgevallen is, was Heritage Park. Het is een zeer grote en gevarieerde historische site, waar ook ritten met een stoomtrein of -boot kunnen gemaakt worden. Voor de rest viel Calgary echter tegen, al hebben de aanwezigheid van voetgangersstraten en fietspaden mij aangenaam verrast.

The best description I can think of for Calgary is a buttugly, extremely expensive cowboy city. Coincidentally I was in town during the Stampede, an annual rodeo festival, and a really expensive event that apparently attracts a lot of tourists. I entered for a while and spent most of my time in the indian village, considering it was by far the most interesting, and you didn’t have to pay extra. I was just in time to see hoopdance, impressive, and throatsinging, not a fan, contests and a bit later I could alse behold a tipi raising race. I quite immediately became a fan of the Blackfoot Chicks with Sticks, I mean with a name like that it’s impossible not to cheer for them. If they’d have a Facebook fanpage, I’d immediately become a fan. Too bad their nerves got the better of them in the final. The attraction in Calgary that I liked most was Heritage Park, a very big historical site with a great variety of interpretion sites. It’s also possible to make rides in a steam train or steam boat. Calgarry was pretty disappointing for the rest though, I was quite pleasantly surprised however when I noticed the presence of pedestrian roads and bike paths.

La meilleure description que je peux vous donner pour Calgary est une ville de cowboys, archichère et archilaide. Par hazard j’étais là pendant la Stampede, un festival annuel de rodéo, en une évènement assez chère qui apparemment attire beaucoup de touristes. J’y suis entré pour quelques instants et passé la plupart de mon temps au village Indien, certainement la partie la plus intéressante et il n’y avait pas de coûtes additionelles. J’étais à temps pour voir les concours de dance de cerceaux, très impressionnant, et de chants de gorge, pas un fan, et un peu plus tard j’ai vu des courses d’acroissement de tipis. J’était immédiatement fan des Blackfoot Chicks with Sticks, je veux dire, avec un nom comme ça c’est impossible de ne pas les supporter. Si elles avaient une page de Facebook je deviendrais fan immédiatement. Dommage que leurs nerfs ne les supportaient pas. L’attraction que j’ai aimé le plus à Calgary était Heritage Park, un grand site historique, très varié, où l’on peut aussi faire des tours en train et bateaux de vapeur. Pour le reste Calgary ne m’a pas vraiment plu, bienque la présence des rues piétonnières et des pistes cyclable m’aie surprise positivement.
